MAG Grading Standards

Complete documentation of our grading methodology. Every grade is backed by measurable criteria to ensure transparency, consistency, and fairness.

The MAG 10-Point Scale

MAG uses a 10-point grading scale with 0.5 increments, providing 19 distinct grades for precise condition assessment.

Each card receives four subgrades: Centering, Corners, Edges, and Surface. The final grade is calculated using the geometric mean of all four subgrades, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

Centering Standards

Centering measures how evenly the printed image is positioned within the card borders. We measure both Left/Right (L/R) and Top/Bottom (T/B) centering ratios.

GradeToleranceRatio RangeDescription
10±2%48/52 - 52/48Virtually perfect centering
9.5±5%45/55 - 55/45Excellent centering
9±8%42/58 - 58/42Minor shift, barely noticeable
8.5±10%40/60 - 60/40Slight off-center
8±13%37/63 - 63/37Noticeable shift
7.5±15%35/65 - 65/35Moderate off-center
7±18%32/68 - 68/32Clearly off-center

Note: Both L/R and T/B must meet the threshold for a grade. The worse of the two ratios determines the centering grade.

Industry Comparison

See how MAG grades compare to PSA and CGC grading scales:

MAG GradeMAG LabelPSA EquivalentCGC EquivalentNotes
10MAG Perfect10 - Gem Mint10 - PristineVirtually flawless
9.5MAG Elite10 - Gem Mint9.5 - Gem MintPSA has no 9.5
9MAG Prime9 - Mint9 - Mint
8.5MAG Superior9 - Mint8.5 - NM/Mint+PSA has no 8.5
8MAG Choice8 - NM-MT8 - NM/Mint
7.5MAG Select8 - NM-MT7.5 - VF+PSA has no 7.5
7MAG Standard7 - NM7 - VF
6.5MAG Fair7 - NM6.5 - FN+PSA has no 6.5
6MAG Acceptable6 - EX-MT6 - FN
5MAG Damaged5 - EX5 - VG/FN

Important Notes:

  • • PSA uses a simpler 1-10 scale without half-grades above 8
  • • CGC offers half-grades throughout their scale, similar to MAG
  • • MAG's geometric mean calculation may result in different final grades than PSA/CGC for cards with uneven subgrades
  • • This comparison is approximate; each grading company has unique standards

Final Grade Calculation

Formula: Geometric Mean

Final Grade = (Centering × Corners × Edges × Surface)^(1/4)

Example Calculation:

Centering
9.5
Corners
9.0
Edges
8.5
Surface
9.0
= (9.5 × 9.0 × 8.5 × 9.0)^(1/4)
= (6,528.75)^(1/4)
= 8.99
Rounded = 9.0
Final Grade
MAG 9 (Prime)

Why Geometric Mean?

  • • One significantly low subgrade appropriately lowers the final grade
  • • Balanced cards are rewarded
  • • A card cannot receive a high grade with one major deficiency
